Brilliant Novel written too soon?

Catherine Ryan Howard never fails to write a decent crime thriller book.

I was a little concerned at the outset that the gamble of writing a book during lockdown, set during lockdown, and releasing it during the pandemic would not be a good draw, being a little too real. I imagine that is a concern other potential readers would share.

However CRH has written 56 days in a very clever fashion, the pandemic and restrictions complement the story and highlight the timescale and events of the plot itself very well.

The story kicks off with the discovery of a body in an apartment before jumping back 56 days and introducing the reader to the main characters, the detectives and the two people who will obviously be involved in the murder.

Where CRH has done a brilliant job is that as usual they feel real, and the concerns and emotions they go through mirror many of my own during lockdown, it is very easy to empathise with the characters and get a understanding of the motivations, even whilst I read in suspense waiting to see who will be revealed as the victim, and who will be the murderer.

It is cleverly written to keep the reader of balance, with a number of twist and turns, and the ending, without giving away spoilers, still took me by surprise even as I thought the story was winding up.

Another solid read by a great crime Author, even if I'm not sure now was the correct time to release it.
