I've been on a huge Mystery-Crime-Suspense-Thriller binge lately and I don't see it abating any time soon (sorry really long Classics TBR pile) so this one was a pretty obvious choice as I wanted something a little more contemporary whilst I waited for any more Ian Rankin to fall gracefully in to my lap.

I debated between 2 and 3 stars for this purely because it was written really nicely and I was kept in suspense for the entire read. However, all other elements I found rather lacklustre or just plain ole boring.

The characters are fairly obvious and honestly the brevity of deciding whether to live together I found alarming and quite frankly anyone that daft enough deserves any amount of horribleness inflicted upon them. At first, it is a ridiculously slow book, but I quite enjoyed that as it did seem to reflect the slowed-down, paired-back nature of Lockdown. Once things started to happen, however, I didn't feel the same enjoyment and it only heightened my frustration with the book.

The Coronavirus backdrop felt pointless to be quite honest, and more like a last-minute marketing tool than any kind of plot device. Whilst I believe it's a good thing it wasn't fully coronavirus-focused (it will be a few years before that can truly happen for me personally), it also didn't feel at all necessary and might have enhanced the enjoyment and intrigue.

56 Days is a very quick and easy read and if you like Crime Fiction then this should definitely be up your street and the whole mystery is enveloping enough to keep you going, but it might be a little too soon to read about Coronavirus.
