I do like a period drama - and this one is set in one if my favourite eras - pre-war London. Anton writes well to introduce us to the protagonist relaying her story to Mrs Moffatt. Her story starts 5 months earlier in 1938.
The story is set in a upmarket London hotel and starts with the viewpoint of Mrs Moffatt followed by other characters within the hotel. Much detail is given to the 1930's period and the social encounters of pre-war London. It is beautifully written and I have savoured each chapter through the eyes of each character. I feel the writer's own thoughts and feelings seem to come through the character of the hotel director - Maynard Charles - who seems a to be a genuine fair amicable person.
This is a book steeped in the period - and the build up to the Christmas period. A good 'Christmas' gift idea for those who like to reminisce of days gone by.
