This is the first novel by Anton du Beke that I have read and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by it.

It’s not my usual genre choice but Christmas is coming and it has been a horrendous year. I thought this book would offer me an escape and it did not disappoint.

I have seen from other reviews that I should have read the preceding books first to properly enjoy this one. I did not miss them. The story reads perfectly well as a stand alone book which, in my view, is a good thing.

I was pleased to find that the book is not all about Christmas, or even all about ballroom dancing. I was pleased, and a little surprised, by the variety of topics tackled. From the age old topics that each generation thinks are new problems, to the ugly face of impending war.

I felt it got a little over the top toward the end, with the departure of Maynard Charles, but I can live with that.

Thank you to Readers First, Zaffre & Anton du Beke for the ARC in return for my honest review.
