Nicola Pryce returns to Cornwall, an area she cleary knows well, in her latest novel, A Cornish Betrothal set in 1797. Amelia and her childhood friend Edmund are betrothed when Edmund, as a midshipman, is listed as missing, presumed dead, after fighting in Guadeloupe. Amelia at the time is 21 years old and heartbroken by the news however the years go by and four years later, on her 25th birthday, she is expecting a proposal from Luke, the local doctor. However, before Luke has a chance to propose, a letter arrives from Edmund. The letter has taken eighteen months to arrive and has been finished by the nuns at the convent in Brazil where he was after contracting yellow fever. Edmund had been forcibly taken from the convent by Portugese sailors, leaving Amelia with the dilemma of choosing between her past and present loves. The author has included some very convenient family trees at the start of the book, so handy to refer to as more characters are introduced. Once again Nicola Pryce has given her readers a brilliant Cornish romance, perfect for curling up with as the nights get cooler.
