This is the third book by David Young about Karin Muller and Co. The story begins with Karin still on maternity leave and her boss making her a difficult to refuse offer. This cuts her maternity leave short, but as she has help from her recently discovered Grandmother, she goes back to work leaving her twins in Helga's capable hands.
Karin and Werner have both been promoted and in their new roles they are sent to investigate the murder of a boy washed up in a river. This takes them further east to the very edges of the DDR. As expected, they soon run into interference run by Stasi agents giving the very clear impression that there is something not quite right about things. Meanwhile Markus, the son of Schmidt, their forensic guy, has gone missing and it looks like this links in with the case they've been warned off of........
