At first glance I thought what a lovely book, the cover looked gothic and rich. I thought here is a book to read with the curtains closed and with the lamp on. I was sadly disappointed, I was expecting a good creepy ghost story which didn’t transpire. The story takes place on an island off the coast of Devon at Blackwater Abbey. Lord Highmount has organised a spiritual gathering, it is 1917 during the dark days of World War One. One of his sons is dead and one is missing,he and his wife Lady Highmount want to contact them during the seance. The guests are hiding secrets of their own, including Kate and Donavan who have been sent to find out who has been revealing secrets to the Germans.
I did enjoy the story, and there were ghosts in the book, it was more of an adventure story. The writing was beautiful and immersive, the ending leaves the book open for another adventure.
