Immediately I knew this book was part of a series (and not the first book), but I don't think that mattered. There was enough introduction that I could understand Selma and what she'd be like.
It's a great start to a book and sets up the mystery right from the off. I'd be very interested in finding out what happens and if Selma really was the target (as I expect she is).
