The book starts with a deal between a thirty seven year old woman who is desperate to conceive and a twenty year old gay man who is down on his luck. Fast forward several years and the consequences of the deal unravel starting with the shooting of Selma Flack in the arm and the killing of her long term friend a junior MP. We eventually discover that the perpetrator is the father of the young man and the whole plot turns around the child welfare system of Norway. The sniper then hangs a judge also involved in child welfare. Selma investigates along with a journalist and police detective. The murderer also works along side the police as a fire arms trainer and points Selma and the detective in the direction of a motive. This leads them to suspect that the Minister in charge of Child welfare is at risk, he then turns up poisoned. To add to the plot Selma has a stalker and her daughter won't let her see her beloved grandson while she is in danger. The plot unravels with the stalker killing the murderer and Selma being reconciled with her daughter.
It took me a while to get into this book but I think that was mainly because of keeping up with all the Norwegian names and places.
