Slow Burner

Anne Holt’s latest Norwegian crime novel is A Memory for Murder and features her character the ex lawyer turned PI Selma Falck.

The story starts with an excellent first chapter but then it becomes a slow burner until the last third when the pace markedly picks up and the various clues, threads and strands are neatly pulled together by the author.

When a friend of Falck’s is shot by a sniper whilst having lunch it is not clear who was the intended target and is Falck now in danger?

The author cleverly uses Norway as an excellent extra character which definitely added to the overall story.

Having read one of Falck’s previous outings I felt that there were no problems with too much “backstory” with just the right balance being achieved for a new reader to have a full enjoyment of the book.

Overall it was a slight disappointment that the pace was not picked up earlier although on balance it was a good read.
