A wonderful tale of good versus evil in the form of Madeleine and Judge Kettle respectively. It is also a tale of friendship and belonging with Madeleine being supported by Mrs Batty her housekeeper in her role as lady of the house. Meanwhile Mrs Batty does battle with Judge Kettle over the housekeeping budget and his overall malevolence towards others.
You hope that over the course of the book that Judge Kettle will get his comeuppance and that Madeleine's child will be cherished and protected from her father.
