Madeline, the innocent young daughter of a charitable clergyman is left destitute when he suddenly dies. She marries an older man. He turns out to be abusive and they have one child, a daughter called Grace as she was born on a Tuesday. After the difficult delivery Madeline nearly died and is left an invalid.
This historical saga follows the ups and downs of Grace’s life as she escapes from her controlling father to be a nun far away in a Welsh convent. There she meets a young priest, Father Luke and her life starts to disintegrate. Bad decisions and unhappy people.
I found this novel better written than many of this genre and quite enjoyed it. Probably this would make a perfect holiday reading book.
