True crime is a fascinating topic. The chance meetings, the decisions to kill on the spur of the moment or over time and how the mind of a killer works. In this case, the mind of both a serial killer and a child. The story was absolutely absorbing while at the same time being abhorrent, like a car crash we want to look away from but we can't since we know this is a true story and stranger than fiction, as is often the case.

However, it is not just the story of a schoolboy killer, it also details the socio-political, historical and economic aspects of the timeframe in which the murders occurred and ways in which the system can fail people.
I have only recently made the leap from true crime documentaries to true crime books, and I found this one absolutely fascinating.

The research that has gone into creating the book is truly awe inspiring, made all the real by the including of photographs like other biographies or autobiographies so we may put a face to the name and the terrifying tale. A great read, and a wake up call as to what goes on around us in the world.
