This book was originally published in 1994 with a different title, The Broken Gate.'
Neither title seems particularly relevant as there is no reference to either a broken gate nor a pinch of salt in the story.
It is a story about Kate Kennedy and her family spanning from the early 1900s to the 1960s. In her quest to rise from poverty in the poor Scottish mining community where she was born, she neglects personal and family relationships until it is too late in many cases.
This book will appeal to fans of Catherine Cookson and Barbara Taylor Bradford although not as good as either, in my opinion. I did not feel sufficiently involved with the main character to share her emotions at the highs and lows in her life.
