Right from the start a felt there was a back story to these characters, and I was right, this is the 5th book in the series, although my first.
It's a kind of "what if..." story, weaving fiction into factual events. What if, during WW2 two cousins who are also princes- one British, one German- meet in a neutral country, each trying to find out how the war is going for the other side. What if, as well as this legal but secret meeting, another one is going down, trying to arrange the defection of a high ranking nazi who is sickened by what his country is doing.
Not a what if, this actually happened, Prince George of Kent's plane crashed in Scotland. The cover story was that it was on it;s way to Iceland, not returning from Sweden. Officially there was only one survivor, but for this book, there were two.
This is where the spy, Professor Tom Wilde comes in. An American living and lecturing in Cambridge, UK, and currently working for the OSS, the US version of SOE. He finds out about the other survivor, and ends up working alongside them to bring the truth to light.
It's a cracking yarn that moves at a fast pace, and apart from the two main characters we have no idea who is loyal to whom. I've now added the previous 4 books to my 'must find' list.
