I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the Tom Wilde books and this was no exception. A Prince and a Spy is based a real event in 1942 involving Prince George, brother of George VI ( who was actually called Albert). It’s the kind of book that send you off to Wikipedia to find out who is real, who isn’t, and what really happened. An author note at the end explains all but I never dare turn to that in case I accidentally catch a glimpse of the last page of the story!
Wilde is a Cambridge don, a bit of an Action man and chivalrous with the ladies! It’s a novel, you have to suspend considerable disbelief as always. His partner, Lydia, is a trifle underwritten-I’m sure she had more to do in previous books. He is an expert on Elizabeth I’s spymasters Walsingham and Cecil which gives him an insight into the machinations of the British secret services as well as the fledgeling American OSS. As well as the derring-do, there are harrowing chapters on the Final Solution and attempts to alert the Allies to what was actually going on in Hitler’s Germany. As it’s based in Cambridge and it’s about spies it’s clear that we are to suspect that this wasn’t just about the Nazis. This was was more or less confirmed in the last few pages giving a tantalising glimpse of another incident which wasn’t all it seemed, and setting up a few suspects, for the next book in the series. I liked the ambiguity around the title...
