I've discovered since I read it, that this is the third book in a series (I did have a suspicion that there might have been a prequel)
It's about one of my favourite genres, womens work and lives during wartime. This one's setting is the East End of London during WW2, and mainly concerns the multiple generations of the Brogan family. There's matriarch Queenie, Ida who is married to Queenie's son Jeremiah, and their children, who with the exception of young Billy are all grown up.. some with babies of their own
Jeremiah and Ida have a hard life, but a loving marriage, until a former friend- having been widowed- moves back to the East End, bringing her son...... who is the image of Jeremiah. But that's not the biggest shock.
I really enjoyed reading this, and I will definitely look out for the rest of the series. It was an easy read, not too much slang or local dialect (some localised books can be quite hard going if you don't know the area/accent)
The time scale is three months, october to christmas, during the worst of the blitz. The nights spent underground in air road shelters bring home the horrors of the times, and the possibility that when you leave in the morning, you may not have a home to go to.
People- women especially- were tough back then!
