I really enjoyed this. This is the story of a family suffering much during World War Two, trying to survive day by day with the threat of enemy bombing day and night. The characters are nicely written though in essence it is the story of Ida and Jerimiah Brogan. What I liked was that their children are presented as rounded characters you know them and understand them. I enjoyed the mingling of the lives of each of the adult daughters and the two young sons. I found the social descriptions useful to put the family in context of the war.

Ida's life comes to a standstill with the discovery of Jerimiah's unknown son with her former best friend. She finds it incredibly hard to come to terms with this. Even more so when her best friend reveals she is dying and wishes her son to have a family.
