I thoroughly enjoyed this book - in fact, I didn't want it to end - I could have continued reading about the Brogan family in war time and all their happy times, sad times, family troubles, trying to scrounge food, etc. I was born at the end of the war but can still remember rationing and ration books. Every time my Mother saw a queue, she knew there would be something worth queuing up for so joined it. I can't remember going into the air raid shelters overnight but reading this book really brought it home to me - having to collect up food, drink, blankets, etc. to last out till daybreak. I'm so glad I wasn't involved in the war but it fascinates me to read all about it. I must try and read Jean's other books - if they are nearly as good as this one, then I will be so pleased.
