A timecapsule to back to 1940 London and the trials of the East End.
Jo and her brother Billy are evacuated to a village near Colchester where life is very different from what they were used to in London's East End. For Jo it means putting her job ambitions and her love for Tommy on hold.
Meanwhile Tommy sees his love for Jo as his motivation to get out of what would become a life of crime with his brother Reggie. He also sees a life with Jo as being a means of making up for a cruel childhood.
