Not my normal type of book, and after picking this up a few times, I actually sat down and read this over a few days, which surprised me. The book flowed well and was written brilliantly.
It's starts with Jo and her younger brother who have been evacuated from London, but you can tell that they will always be outsiders, so after leaving to travel back home the story picks up the pace. Meeting their siblings you can feel the tension between them all and the underlying stories.
Jo is in love with Tommy who is always thought to be the troublemaker, his family stories and dark secrets are also told.

Will Jo and Tommy get together and overcome the obstacles, will the war and outside influences actually let them become who they should be or will Reggie and Jo's family break all their hearts.

I never once struggled with this book and actually ended up taking it to work to read during lunch breaks. A couple of pages I actually nearly cried but I was surprised as to how much this one affected me. Will now be looking for some more books by this author and the era.
