I found this a very atmospheric book, it certainly captured the war. The characters were well written and very relatable to even though it was set at a time I never experienced. It easily told the story of the war time from a point of view that is not usually presented. The struggle of the women at home, not just from rationing but from an emotional stance.
I found myself wound up with the characters and wanting to know what was going to happen. The author has written a beautiful book that evokes empathy for characters that are as relevant today as then, but set cleverly at a time which has a somewhat fairy tale sort of feel, shown to be not correct. The struggles and suffering predisposed but not in a history book or depressing way.
It is a brilliant summer read for anybody who wants to escape into a time of hope, for a few hours. You definitely will not want to put it down.
