The characters felt like I knew them personally, I found myself determined for Francesca to have a happy ending. I found myself sharing her despair for when she wanted Charlie, but couldn't because he was taken. However, I have gotten attached to the Brogan family, and knew that the pain caused for Stella would be heart-breaking, so it was a book where I kept having conflicting emotions, and it kept me hooked.

The style of writing was easy to follow, there was enough dramatic suspense built up, but it all seemed realistic and easy to imagine. I love a good period drama, and this felt really accurately set in the war, with basing the character's lives on what did impact them at the time. It transports the reader back to the 1940's, and into what east end London would have been like.

I loved how easy it was to imagine these things in detail thanks to the authors descriptive writing. I absolutely loved this book.
