I read the paperback copy of this episode in the Brogan family sage. It worked just fine as a standalone story which focuses upon Charlie Brogan and the girl who loves him, Francesca Fabrino. We learn a lot about living in the Blitz in wartime London. The detail is all there but as an effortless background to the story.

Most of the characters are drawn with sympathy and it's easy to imagine yourself taking part in the story. As a romance there are, of course, obstacles to true love and these are shown well. The ending may not be the one you are hopng for but everything does work out satisfyingly.

I've read others of Jean Fullerton's well researched social histories and hope she continues with the Brogan family saga.
