WOW!
Just the opening few pages prove that the comparisons to B Cornwell (not Cornwall ReadersFirst :D ) that had me worried, isn't just hype.

Just the vocabulary and specifics in the opening pages of the prologue show that Mr Brun knows the period he is writing about.

I love that there is this glimpse from the start into the novel before chapter one introduces the main protagonist, and quickly brings in the events already alluded to and the story explodes from there.

I don't know much about the historical events in this part of the world at the time but I loved the Warrior chronicles and this definitely reads on a par with it for this opening at least.

I really enjoyed this first glimpse,It had a bit of everything for a viking novel, gore, scene setting, subject knowledge and mystery.
