There is certainly plenty of action here and a stab at period authenticity. Unfortunately, it all feels very filtered through modern sensibilities and this lessens the impact of the time and prevents you from becoming absorbed in the story; leaving you feel removed from the action.
Maybe it will improve as the book moves on and settles in to it's stride but, somehow, I suspect that it is painting a more modern story with a sheen of history.
