This is very much the sort of book you would gift, perhaps as a stocking filler or for that secret Santa situation at the office, or workplace. It has its jokes, but also some good alternatives to the usual Christmas 'stuff'. We all feel we buy things, such as crackers, at Christmas, whether we enjoy them or not. Here you are given alternatives, some jokey, some not. I love the format of the book with historical notes intermingled with quizzes. This is a fun way to rethink the festive season and maybe invent some more of your own. There is a strong environmental message here, but not at the expense of good old fashioned humour. This is very much a book for now, so popular cultural references may not survive you keeping it for a couple of years in your gift cupboard before you finally gift it.
If you are struggling to get a gift for someone at Christmas, you could do a lot worse than purchase this fun and clever take on the holiday.
