Caroline’s dream beachfront home is everything she hoped it would be, a haven for lavish parties and expensive ornaments, the pinnacle of her aspirations. However, her husband is lying to her, her life is falling apart and, to top it all off, there is a stranger on the beach watching her home from afar. In an act of desperation, she sees the stranger again as a bartender in a local pub, and Aiden seems like the perfect remedy to distract from her problems. A fling that means nothing to her and everything to him starts a deadly obsession with Caroline and her family, making her muddled life even more disturbing. And when her husband goes missing, the nightmare gets darker and even more frightening.

This was one of those thrillers that grips you from the start and does not let you go until the end. Starting with the one-night stand and the obsession and moving into the murder mystery, the book aimed to keep me on my toes for the duration. I definitely preferred the first half of the book to the second – I felt very close to the action and it was hugely tense to read, whereas the second half took a step back and was from the perspective of the investigating police which felt a bit too removed from the action of the previous half. I also guessed the ending and the final twist and, whilst it was a great twist, it did feel a bit predictable to me. Campbell’s style of writing was very direct and in your face, which I liked and found worked when she was describing the unreliable narration of Caroline and Aiden, however I was a bit disappointed by the murder investigation section – it felt a bit late to be introducing new characters.

Basically, this was not my favourite thriller that I have ever read, however it was certainly a twisty and gripping one all the same. For now, I think I am going to take a little break from thrillers, my brain cells cannot take any more!
