This is the second book in the Her Majesty the Queen Investigates series, a fabulously clever series of cozy mysteries with an intriguing premise - the Queen as amateur sleuth - that can’t fail to make you smile. I loved The Windsor Knot so was delighted to have the opportunity to revisit the Queen and her Assistant Private Secretary Rozie as they attempt to piece together the clues to solve crimes in their midst - in this case a body found dead beside the swimming pool at Buckingham Palace, a missing painting and a series of poison pen letters. And it proved to be another entertaining read with fabulous characterisation and no shortage of gentle humour.

I love the way S J Bennett blends fact and fiction - set in 2016 following the Brexit referendum and the US Presidential election between Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton, there are plenty of topical references both to world events and to members of the Royal Family, all done in an engaging tongue in cheek manner. The portrayal of the Queen with her sharp wit, ability to manage situations and an eagle eye as to what is going on in the royal household, as well as the dynamics of her relationship with Prince Phillip, is delightful - and I enjoyed getting to know Rozie better.

If you’re looking for a fun, easy read to curl up with that will make you laugh and will keep you engaged, then this is one to pick up - I am certainly looking forward to the next book in the series.
