Like Harry Potter each house has an animal crest, however unlike Harry Potter there is no school but instead a dangerous game of royalty betrayals and secrets.
After her father passes Aderyn is now protector of Atratys, but she has a secret. Aderyn is flightless as she cannot turn into her house bird, and so she is seen as lesser and was told she must stay hidden even from her uncle the king. But not even her fathers death will stop her finding out why her mother was murdered so long ago.
My first impression of A Throne of Swans was that it was a very slow start with a lot of names and confusing places to that made it hard to take in. However by the time Aderyn arrives at her uncles kingdom things begin to speed up. However as is the case with most royal books there is a lot of politics and conspiracy surrounding the throne. This makes the book hard to enjoy if one does not have a political knowledge.
Overall the book was a great read and i look forward to reading the second book A Crown Of Talons
