In a fantasy world I want to understand how it all hangs together without wading through tedious descriptions. In any novel I want to have fully dimensioned characters who I feel I know personally. And I want to like at least some of them. So I was delighted to find this story. It's great to hear it will be the start of a series because it really has it all.

A Throne of Swans has a sheltered vulnerable coming-of-age protagonist with some solid friendships who wades into the politics and ceremony of court life whilst keeping a dangerous secret, encountering first love and nursing a desire for revenge. Phew! And it's all done masterfully with great pace and excitement, realistic dialogue and a pervading sense of danger.

And the novel is enhanced by a map and a family tree, both of which are appreciated.
