In 1949, Caro has moved to Kelly Castle in Fife, with her new husband, Alasdair, and their baby. Her mother in law, Martha, sets Caro the task of compiling a full history of the family and the castle - including working out the identity of the missing wife - Alasdair’s great grandmother has been wiped from all records.
Then, a human body is found within the castle grounds….
Interspersed between the chapters about Caro and her family, are chapters telling the story of Kelly Castle’s earlier inhabitants, in the 1880’s. The tale takes the reader to several different locations, even as far as the Arctic circle, as we learn of the characters love, courage and friendships.
There are several sub plots, which weave seamlessly into the main ‘who is the missing wife?’ mystery. The sub plots help to keep the story moving forwards, there honestly isn’t a dull page within this novel.
This is a beautifully written, poignant tale. I honestly can’t recommend it enough. It is perfect as a cosy autumn or winter read ☺️
