I enjoyed this book so much more than I thought I would.

I was instantly drawn into the story of the Gillan bride. I empathised with Caroline, being a new mum too, her husband Alasdair is very much under his mother’s thumb and she can be quite domineering in her approach to how Caroline should approach motherhood.

I loved the dual timelines and how the story unfolded at a clever pace I don’t normally enjoy historical fiction and like my books to be set in the here and now but this one was really interesting

I also enjoyed the parts of the story set in the Arctic. It was fascinating to read about the whaling trade. Although I disapprove of the whaling industry, it was interesting to read about what a harsh life it was for the Scottish sailors, away from home for so long and at the mercy of the elements.

On a whole I really enjoyed this book. The author has created a beautiful novel.
