A dual time line story which travels between the late 19th Century and 1949, this is a tender story and one about family, it’s history and it’s secrets

Caro struggling with living under her assumed expectations of her higher class mother-in-law sets about searching out their unknown past and takes the reader into 1870s Scotland and the Arctic whaling boats. It is full of details about the Scottish expeditions, the men who sailed to the Arctic and the Inuit people who helped them. It was easy to visualise to the vast, snowy landscape of the north. It shows the care and research of the author. I loved learning about this period from this novel, as it was something I knew nothing about

The mystery of the body buried at Kelly is well told as pieces are discovered through Caro’s research. It seamlessly moves between the two periods as more pieces of the puzzle are discovered. Although the mystery of the missing bride is revealed early, the question of who the body is keeps the reader guessing until the end, and surprised me with its reveal. I loved the characters of the past, who are very different from each other, but are all fully fleshed out by the author.

This is a book that moves between a post-war Kelly Castle in Fife; the Victorian dockyards of Dundee and the icy plains of North Canada and is a truly captivating, and at times heartbreaking, read, and one I would highly recommend
