A book that lovers of historical fiction can really get their teeth into, but also those who love a mystery or a female drama. Using the unusual location of the Arctic as a setting, which explains the mysterious title of A Woman Made of Snow, there is an excellent use of competing storylines which never become confusing or uninteresting.

As a Scottish historian, the synopsis of this book really appealed to me, and since the main narrative takes place in 1949, which is within my area of research I was sold. The family consisting of protagonist Caroline, her husband and their child move to his family estate in Scotland, and taking up residence in a modest cottage, which the main building is occupied by Caroline's mother-in-law. A flood on the estate throws up a body on the castle grounds and results in Caroline becoming a full fledged detective in hopes it disclosing the identity of the mysterious corpse.

The story later shifts back in time to a previous generation of the family, which is a smooth and interesting transition. A joy to read, and one that keeps the interest from start to finish, it is also worth adding how simplistic and yet aesthetically pleasing the front over of the novel is. A great read on a cold autumn evening.
