A woman of snow is a captivating novel set in Scotland. We follow 2 stories In 1949 Caro and her husband Alasdair have moved back to Kelly Castle, his dilapidated family estate in the middle of nowhere. Stuck caring for their tiny baby and trying to sort out the family archives, Caro discovers a century-old mystery that stretches as far as the Arctic circle, revealing It much about the Scottish whalers and the Inuit people in the 1870s. In fact, it was my favourite part of the book, particularly Oliver and Yarat's doomed relationship.

Unfortunately my copy was rather delayed, arriving a month after its publication date and I can only now sit down to write this review. Still, Gifford's prose is beautifully arranged, and the plot very clear. I was compelled to continue reading it, and would have loved to have had more of a glimpse into the life of Yarat in Canada. Magnetic & mournful.
