This one was a heartbreaking historical mystery, full of atmosphere and romance.

Scotland in 1949, and Caro is struggling with her new life at Kelly castle with her mother-in-law interfering all the time. But when the body of a woman is unearthed and Caro begins trying to piece together the history of the family, she finds herself captivated by her husband Alasdair’s great grandfathers’ travels to the Arctic, and the marriage which tore apart their family…

I have to admit that this was a bit of a slow burn for me, but once we got further into Oliver’s story and all the excitement of his journey to the Arctic circle, I was hooked. This novel has a great combination of intrigue and romance, and I especially loved the locations of the imposing castle in Scotland, and unwelcoming Arctic.

What I especially enjoyed, and no doubt many will relate to, was the difficult relationship between Caro and her mother-in-law. It’s such a delicate relationship in any circumstances, but throw in living together and a baby into the mix and of course it makes for some tense reading!

This isn’t an easy story in many ways - with some of it set in the late 1800s, prejudice was rife and the treatment of certain characters, and the legacy that leaves, is devastating. But thankfully there are some satisfying moments at the end which add a little reprieve, and it’s just such a beautifully written and compelling story that I’d be happy to recommend it to anyone who prefers a slightly slower pace!
