Slighty disappointing

I really enjoyed the Lost Lights of St Kilda, so I was very much looking forward to reading this book. I had hoped for a similar style of writing as I found the descriptions and passion that brought the setting and characters to life engaging.

However I was soon disappointed as the story progressed and flipped between two time lines. The more recent setting was very twee and the characters grated. Although it might be more typical of the era, it was sugary and at times repetitive.

I struggled at first with the historical setting. I just couldn't get into that, so each time the book went back to that era I was very tempted to skim, which doesn't help with understanding the threads later on in the book. I hate to give up on a book so struggled on.

I do like the cover, but couldn't really recommend this read to anyone who had enjoyed the previous book like myself.
