A great, twisty turny tale

I loved this. The characters were diverse but believable, and varied between being the kind of people you would like to know and those you would stay far away from. I especially liked that we see the same characters from different viewpoints (one of the narrators describes his own family, and we read about that same family, quite differently perceived, in Hanne's diary). There was a good bit of suspense, and various different twists and turns along the way to keep surprising the reader. I found this quite difficult to put down, once I found myself lost in the wintry and lonely landscape of Ormberg. The technique of using a biased and opinionated narrator who I couldn't always sympathise with (the detective who grew up in the town and has suffered as a result, but can't quite seem to get away...) was very powerful.
