Malin is back in the small industrial town of Ormberg (where she grew up) to investigate a cold case with the help of psychological profiler Hanne, and her investigator partner Peter. We find out at the outset that it was actually Malin that found the body of the girl at the cairn, 10 years previously.

Hanne is found near the forest shoeless, with torn clothing and covered in dirt and blood by a local boy, Jake. There is no sign of Peter, and Hanne can't remember anything.

Jake also finds Hanne's diary, but keeps this to himself. He reads it over the course of a few days (we get to read each instalment with him); it quickly emerges that Hanne's memory issues are down to more that just traumatic amnesia - she has dementia.

The book switches between chapters following Malin and the police investigation into both Peter's disappearance and the cold case, and Jake - what is going on in his life and him reading the diary.

I really enjoyed this book, it wasn't as typically gory as some Scandi thrillers can be, but it was atmospheric and well written. I also like the cover, which I thought conveyed the harsh conditions of the landscape. I would definitely recommend it.
