From the cover blurb, I thought this book was going to be more focussed on Hanne and her dementia but she almost felt like an incidental character - which is a shame as it would have made an interesting angle on a crime tale.
Anyhow the book tells the story from the perspective of many different characters and veers between the current investigation and past events. Both are told in a "real time" fashion though so it took me a while to realise that some chapters were actually relating to past events.
Years ago Malin found the body of a child by a cairn in a remote part of the forest. She's now back to investigate that cold case. Fellow, forsenic, investigators Hanne and Peter have also come on board to try and solve the case. However, Peter has gone missing and Hanne has emerged one night from the forest bruised and confused.
She was found by confused teen Jake who also found her diary and is secretly reading it and learning some startling truths about fellow inhabitants of their remote village.
When another body is found by the cairn it's up to the police to try and figure out a connection. If only they had Hanne's diary to help (since her dementia means she can't).
There were some unexpected twists right at the finish but overall I found the pace a little plodding. A decent read but not a thriller I could describe as unputdownable.
