This is definitely not the usual era I favour for the historical fiction genre, however I cannot deny that the intriguing cover and the synopsis caught my attention enough for me to read the first chapters, if for no other reason that to have a book to recommend to my dad who favours this era of history.

I can safely say after reading the opening chapters that I was not disappointed in the slightest, and has made me curious to read up on the known facts of what happened in this period to provide me with more context for this book as a whole.

That being said, I believe that in order to really appreciate the characters and the story, you need a good knowledge of the time, and some semblance of interest in the military and war, as well as being comfortable with a book told from multiple points of view.

If it wasn't for the impression I get that this will have a lot of military focus, I would absolutely give this book a chance, but unfortunately it does and it is not something I have a head for. I would however recommend it to my dad who has more interest and knowledge about the military, and likely wouldn't be deterred by it.

Alexander's Legacy seems to be a book written with a specific audience in mind which I believe I don't fall into.

All this being said, the overall quality of the writing is good (if not a little heavy on the descriptive side), and the author immediately sets up what the bulk of the action will cover and provides the reader with a good sense of what each player's strengths and weaknesses are as the upcoming power struggle begins.
