I have to say that I struggled a bit with this one to start with - the style of writing took some getting used to (a real drawling American feel) but once I'd got there this really was worth the wait.
Girls have been disappearing and when Summer Ryan goes missing her sister, Raine, is determined to launch an investigation.
With the help of wannabe cop Noah and his buddy Purv they start looking into the previous girls who went missing.
They stumble upon a connection before the local Police force and look to be well on the way to solving the mystery.
Strangely though, the hunt for "The Bird" is almost secondary to the multi layered lives of all the locals.
Chris Whitaker paints a rich and colourful picture of this small American town. A place you may well describe as full of "rednecks" . Men who are willing to take the law into their own hands - though are they hiding dark secrets of their own? Family life sure is complex around here and the church plays a massive part in everyday life.
Summer herself has been hiding a major secret.
One thing is certain, God moves in mysterious ways and by the time the book builds to it's crescendo it's clear that life in smalltown Grace is never going to be the same again.
