When I first saw the cover, and picked out the words 'World War Two' from the Readers First sub text; I pictured myself back at Auschwitz and had to read the First glance.

My first impression is that the author is incredibly intelligent with the words he uses and the way he drives the story forward. Christoper de Vinck's ability to illustrate the two main characters and how their friendship is developing is beautiful. The author tells us what we need to know, in order to understand.

I feel like he breathes life into this story and the skeletal structure are the facts from his grandfathers war journal. Aside from the facts, happy friendship between Simone and Hava - Ashes captures the sentiment of many Europeans of what was happening in Germany and Poland. The story so far is powerful and poignant and I'm looking forward to reading the rest!
