This is a book which will be remembered by the reader long after they have finished reading it. It is based on the experiences of the author’s mother who was an eighteen year old living in Brussels at the start of World War 2.
Besides providing insights about the Nazi invasion of Belgium, the retreat to Dunkirk of the Allied troops and what it was like to live in Europe during those times, this book is primarily about a beautiful friendship between 2 teenagers, Simone and Hava.
There is no happy ending, I’m afraid, as there wasn’t for over 6 million non Arian people but there are several instances where the kindness of strangers and the fun loving relationship of the girls was poignant and uplifting.
Well worth reading.
