This was a bit different to other books I have read of a similar nature and I really enjoyed the short chapters with quotes at the beginning. I found this to be really informative for myself.
It has taken me a while to actually get around to posting a review of this brilliant book but I have so enjoyed reading Christopher De Vinck's novel based on true events and have found myself sitting up at night reading and avoiding tasks I needed to do so I could finish just one more chapter of this novel. It has even inspired me to keep reading and question my historian partner further about the war.

This was a book full of emotion and really evoked a strong response from me, it was intense straight off the bat and kept up feelings of anxiety and survival throughout. I was rooting for Simone and her Jewish friend Hava throughout this entire novel. I loved Hava and her carefree nature and how Simone met her through the red cross and they both fell deeply in love with the opera. There is a strong sense of love throughout this novel and how people will walk through bombings to get to their friends. It reminded me slightly of Annette's story in wolfenstein: the old blood.
