Bad Things Happen Here by Rebecca Barrow is a young adult murder mystery with some romance added in.
Luca lives on an idyllic island called Parris with her family and is part of the wealthy crowd. However the island has a history of violent deaths against young women which is treated as a curse to be joked about.
The last victim was Luca's best friend Polly when they were younger which she has never gotten over.
The novel is set over a few weeks with a lot of intermixed events, firstly Naomi moves in next door into Polly's old house and Luca finds herself attracted to her.
Luca's sister Whitney goes missing at a party with all their friends and is later found dead.
Luca decides to investigate the death along with Naomi as the police seem keen to place her as the murderer. Throughout the investigation her and Naomi become closer and the romantically involved.
I really enjoyed this novel as the murder mystery side kept me guessing right to the end. The romance was fun and light and not too cheesy.
The paradise island and descriptions of the wealthy lifestyle seemed a bit stereotypical but this did not detract from enjoying the story. Would recommend as a good read.
