I love a book that has plenty of background, it really allows the reader to feel connected to the characters, like they have known them for longer than just a few pages. This story has that quality and it works extremely well. At the beginning you barely know who Scott is, just that he's a young man at university with a seemingly normal life, a roommate, a love prospect, a subject that he's passionate about. Then the backstories start, and suddenly you know that he has in fact had a difficult life, suffering from heart failure at seven years old, and it really helps because you no longer just know the surface details, but also the early trauma that shaped his life and the struggles he had to get to where he is today.

I would love to read more, Scott seems to be so optimistic in the face of death and I am truly hoping that he triumphs.
