This is a difficult review to write. This is almost a brilliant book but just misses the mark in conclusion. But if you are a horror fan please don't let it put you off. To put it another way, the book is brilliant and deserved better.
William Friend has demonstrated he is quite the adept novelist. The family's world became immersive and smooth to read. You empathised and felt a genuine understanding of the family's emotions and struggles. The paranormal element worked as well due to its constant presence but always in a subtle way.
I did find this hard to put down and I suppose my displeasure with the ending is more that the subtlety built and built so I wanted to it explode and it didn't, it just gave you an uncomfortable chill. Where the ending would work well is on a screen where Black Mamba will be a beast to be contended with.
As an ending to a review I will say something which may make you feel the same way I did about the the book, despite only giving this a three star rating, I will be first in line to read Friend's second novel.
