This is William Friend ‘s first novel and I look forward to his future books.
The main protagonist is Alfie who recently lost his wife and is bringing up his twin girls on his own .... with help from his late wife’s twin sister and mother who has weird religious ideas. They live in a peculiar old house with a troubled past that used to belong to his mother in law.
So he finds it very difficult to cope when his daughters suddenly announce that there is a man in their room. In time Black Mamba becomes the twins invisible friend.
The tension is quite skilfully raised as Black Mamba seems to hold a very unhealthy hold over the girls who both start to behave peculiarly and aggressively.
I particularly enjoyed the ending as it quite cleverly allows you to imagine what could be happening.....
This is quite a well written book, the story told by various characters but sometimes this confuses the reader. But I mostly enjoyed it.
